You have several choices for an unexpected pregnancy. Sorting through each can feel difficult, especially if you’re unsure where to begin.
If you don’t wish to parent, you have two choices for your pregnancy. Learning everything possible about abortion and adoption can help you make a confident decision.

Understanding Abortion
Abortion is the only option that ends a pregnancy. The procedure type depends on the gestational age (how far along the woman is), her health, and other factors.
Medical abortion is FDA-approved through 10 weeks gestation and uses drugs to end the pregnancy. When a woman takes these drugs, she will experience abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding.
Surgical abortion uses drugs, suctioning, and/or surgical tools to end a pregnancy. Typical side effects include vaginal bleeding or spotting and cramping.
Abortion carries certain risks that could impact a woman’s health. For example, heavy and prolonged bleeding or infection could occur after a medical abortion, while uterine perforation or damage to the cervix could happen during a surgical abortion.
It is also critical to note that not everyone is eligible for an abortion. If you are considering this option, you should confirm your pregnancy with an ultrasound and discuss your specific situation with your healthcare provider.
If you have a positive pregnancy test at our clinic, you will be offered a free limited ultrasound to confirm, date, and locate your pregnancy. We’ll also discuss the risks and side effects of abortion procedure so you stay informed.
Understanding Adoption
Adoption means you would continue the pregnancy and place your child in an adoptive family. Some women find this option challenging, while others receive peace of mind in knowing their child is cared for.
There’s much to learn about this option. Speaking with an adoption specialist or agency can provide additional clarification and help you decide whether it’s right for you.
As the birth mother, you create an adoption plan that fits your preferences for communication and forming a relationship with the adoptive family. There are multiple plans to choose from:
- Open adoption: You establish regular contact and form a relationship with the adoptive family through letters, visits, phone calls, and more.
- Semi-open adoption: You interact with the adoptive family, but all contact is mediated through a third party (i.e., an adoption attorney or agency).
- Closed adoption: All identifying records are sealed. You and the adoptive family won’t have contact or know each other.
All adoption services and medical expenses are paid, and birth mothers may be eligible for additional financial or material assistance. Creating an adoption plan is entirely your choice; no one can pressure you into selecting this option.
We’ll walk you through this option and direct you to additional resources as needed. The pregnancy decision is yours alone; we’ll help you make a confident one.
