Woman sitting outdoors while wondering whether the changes in her body are common pregnancy symptoms.

If you’ve been sexually active and your body has started feeling different, you may be wondering whether you could be pregnant. While every pregnancy is unique, there are several common early symptoms that many women experience during the first few weeks.

It’s important to remember that these symptoms don’t automatically mean you’re pregnant. Stress, hormonal changes, illness, and other medical conditions can cause similar signs. The only way to know for sure is to take a pregnancy test and, if the result is positive, follow up with an ultrasound.

Here are five of the most common early pregnancy symptoms. Read on to learn more, or contact Crossroads Care Clinic to find free, confidential pregnancy testing and a safe space to ask questions.

1. A Missed Period

For many women, a missed period is the first sign that something has changed.

If your menstrual cycle is usually regular and your period doesn’t arrive when expected, it may be time to take a pregnancy test. However, irregular periods can happen for many reasons, including stress, weight changes, certain medications, or medical conditions, so a missed period alone isn’t enough to confirm a pregnancy.

2. Nausea or Morning Sickness

Nausea or “morning sickness” is one of the best-known pregnancy symptoms, but despite its name, morning sickness can happen at any time of day or night.

Some women experience mild nausea, while others experience frequent vomiting. These symptoms often begin around the sixth week of pregnancy, although they can start earlier or later depending on the individual.

3. Fatigue

Feeling unusually tired is another common early pregnancy symptom.

As your body begins supporting a pregnancy, hormonal changes, particularly rising progesterone levels, can leave you feeling exhausted, even if you’re getting enough sleep.

While fatigue can certainly have other causes, it may be worth taking a pregnancy test if other pregnancy symptoms accompany it.

4. Tender or Swollen Breasts

Hormonal changes early in pregnancy can cause your breasts to become sore, swollen, or more sensitive than usual.

Some women also notice that their nipples become more tender or that the veins in their breasts appear more noticeable. These changes often occur before a missed period and can be one of the earliest signs of pregnancy.

5. Frequent Urination

If you’ve suddenly found yourself making more trips to the bathroom than usual, pregnancy could be one possible explanation.

Early in pregnancy, hormonal changes and increased blood flow to your kidneys cause your body to produce more urine. As pregnancy progresses, your growing uterus can also place additional pressure on your bladder.

Like many pregnancy symptoms, however, frequent urination can also have other causes, including increased fluid intake or certain medical conditions.

Symptoms Alone Can’t Confirm a Pregnancy

While these symptoms may point to pregnancy, they aren’t enough to give you a definite answer.

The best way to know if you’re pregnant is to take a pregnancy test. Pregnancy tests detect human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), the hormone your body produces after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus.

If your pregnancy test is positive, your next step should be an ultrasound.

An ultrasound provides important medical information that a pregnancy test cannot, including:

  • Whether the pregnancy is located inside the uterus
  • Whether the pregnancy is viable and progressing
  • Approximately how far along you are (gestational age)

This information is important for protecting your health and understanding your pregnancy options before making any decisions.
