Finding out you’re pregnant can have you asking a lot of questions, and figuring out how to tell your parents may be one of the biggest. If you’re still in school or living at home, you might feel unsure about what to say or how they’ll react. That’s completely normal.
Crossroads Care Clinic provides a safe space to gather your thoughts, ask questions, and take one step at a time. Schedule an appointment to process your next steps and think through what you want to say to your parents.
Here are five steps to consider as you prepare to talk with your parents about your pregnancy.
1. Start with the Facts
While home pregnancy tests are helpful, we recommend confirming your results with a highly sensitive pregnancy test. This ensures accuracy and gives you the information you need to move forward with confidence.
2. Think Through What You’d Like to Say
Take a few minutes to gather your thoughts. You don’t need to know everything or have a detailed plan, but sharing what you know and how you’re feeling can open the door for a better conversation.
It’s okay for you to say something like, “I just found out, and I’m still figuring out what to do.” Honesty really is the best policy and will help your parents see that you’re taking this seriously.
3. Find a Good Time to Talk
Try to choose a time when your parents aren’t stressed or distracted. Let them know beforehand that you have something important to discuss. A calm, private setting gives you both the space to focus and respond respectfully.
If talking face-to-face feels too difficult, writing a letter or sending a message first can be a helpful way to start the conversation.
4. Expect a Range of Reactions
Your parents may be surprised, worried, or unsure how to respond at first. That’s okay. Give them a moment to take in the news and respond in their own way. Remember: you’ve had some time to think about this, and now they’ll need some time, too.
If emotions run high, keep your focus on staying calm and grounded. Let them know you’re looking for their support, not their judgment.
5. Know That Support Is Here
Whether the conversation goes smoothly or not, you don’t have to figure everything out in one day. Crossroads Care Clinic is here to walk with you through your next steps.
We offer no-cost, confidential support and education on all your options—including parenting and adoption. Our goal is to provide you with information, encouragement, and resources so you can make the best decision for your future.
